NSF-MSF Softball Report - June 19, 2014

Softball season underway

With the start of summer nearly here, softball competition is heating up right along with the weather.

One of the most anticipated tournaments of the summer, the 19th Annual Cambridge Classic was held last weekend at Sandquist Family Park in Cambridge.

Jimmy’s Pourhouse, Free Agents, CJ’s win Cambridge Softball Classic

Twenty-nine teams fought through some tough weather at Sandquist Family Park, June 13-15, competing in three separate brackets. Jimmy’s Pourhouse of St. Joseph, Minn., with tournament MVP Jake Freeman on the squad, upended Team Hard, of Superior, Wis., 19-17 to claim the men’s championship. Minnesota Monitoring of Brooklyn Center, with locals Kevin and Chad Kostecka, took third-place honors.

CJ’s from the Chisago league beat the Ideal Bulldogs of the Cambridge-Isanti league 23-13 to capture the Tier 2 Men’s championship.

The Free Agents of Maple Grove beat Schroeders/Brainerd Explosion 8-5 in the Women’s championship, while The Beavers from the Cambridge-Isanti league took third.

Postseason Tournament Berths Awarded Soon

Girls’ Fastpitch and Adult Fast, Slow and Modified Pitch league directors will soon get their allotment of berths for postseason play.

Most NSF•MSF tournaments are three-game guarantee format so there are very few two-and-barbeque situations.

If you do not qualify for postseason play by virtue of your finish in local league play, ask your league director to discern if additional berths may be available by virtue of some leagues not filling all their berths. State tournaments feature the best playing conditions, umpires, competition and awards of the year, so don’t miss out on the atmosphere at a state tournament this year.

Girls’ Fastpitch entry fees are due July 5 and most adult fees are due by July 20.

A reminder adult slow and modified teams are allowed to pick up two players from a team in their league not going to NSF•MSF state tournament play, provided the player emanates from a team in the same class or below. Adult fastpitch teams are allowed four. This will help teams who come up short at the 11th hour.

Cambridge Qualifier Next on Tap

A reminder the 29th Annual Ed Oliver National Qualifier will be held on July 12-13 in Cambridge. Entry deadline is July 7. You may enter online at http://msf1.org/?p=6451. This is the last qualifier of the season.

Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame

Many nominations have been received for the 2014 Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame Banquet on Saturday, Nov. 1.

The 2014 class of inductees will be announced in late July or early August.

Thank you for your support of the Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame!

Minnesota Youth Baseball State Tournaments set for July 25-27

The 2014 MSF Baseball State Tournaments will take place the weekend of July 25-27 at several locations across the state. Entries and at-large berth applications are due July 1. See msf1.org for more details!

The 26th Annual Minnesota Girls Fastpitch High School All-Star Series a success

The 26th Annual Minnesota Girls Fastpitch High School All-Star Series was graced by beautiful weather on June 8 at Caswell Park in North Mankato. Seventy-two of the state’s best high school senior fastpitch players had a chance to show off their extreme fastpitch skills all the while having fun and a chance to meet and play with other all-stars from around the state.

Three players received scholarships underwritten by the Minnesota Sports Federation. The three scholarships, named in memory of past Sports Federation members Don Bauer, Paula Bergren and Bob Laufenberger, went to Karlee Pfaff of New Ulm Cathedral, Ashley Olson of Luverne and Kayla Bohlke of East Ridge.

Cambridge, North Mankato to host National Softball Federation Tournaments

Cambridge, Minn., will host the National Softball Federation’s 3rd Annual North American Men’s and Women’s Slowpitch Championships on August 29-31.

More progress has recently been made on the Cambridge Sports Complex with a third lighted field and a fourth field added. Congrats to Cambridge on the continued progress. Still left on the drawing board is a fifth field and Minnesota Softball Hall of Fame/Viewing Deck!

Caswell Park in North Mankato will host the first National Softball Federation North American Fastpitch Championships for men and women on August 22-24. To learn more about the NSF North American Championships, visit the tournament website at www.nsfsoftball.org.

Best wishes in postseason tournament competition to all!
